I’ve never been much of a talker. When speaking, I relay the main points of what I am speaking about instead of focusing on smaller details, and the same goes for how I articulate subjects through my art. I focus on the bigger picture- the main contours of things- rather than the smaller details within them. I’ve figured out how to say the most with the least within my art, just as I have when speaking. In this way, the small-scale circular illustrations of nature that I create take on a simplistic, minimal quality. I found illustration to be one of the most effective forms of art which I could use to convey this simplistic train of thought, while still developing my own style through it.
My biggest inspiration in the way I have developed the creation of my art comes from the post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. The way he took nature and reinterpreted it in such an individualistic style with his impasto brushstrokes, as well as the way he portrayed nature in his own perspective, inspired me to do the same. His love of nature and the many works he created with it inspired me similarly and brought a love of nature that I would have never had regardless. I’ve always struggled with finding a way to express myself without words, and van Gogh’s distinct art style inspired me to find my expression through my art. When my words can’t seem to say what I want, I can depend on my art to say it.
